Freezing in Trenton, Illinois ~ Rosie Warner Photography

We were so cold and stuck at home last week. It seems to ice more than snow here in southern Illinois. Jason didn’t go to work for three days because of the ice on the roads, leaving us stuck inside, unable to go anywhere.

The break from life was nice. We finally slowed down, got cozy, and relaxed on the couch. Surprisingly, we found little time to work on any of our ongoing projects, like the upstairs studio or the trim work throughout the house, or the closet doors, or general de-cluttering…

We did make it out for a short walk to the mailbox, treacherous as it was. I brought my camera out to record our venture. On the way back from the mailbox, I snapped a few quick photos of Jason’s frozen two and a half ton army truck. It looked quite ominous with its frozen chains and head lights staring at us.

Of course, I made Jason scuttle across the ice to pose in front of it. Amazingly, neither one of us fell. Though, I came close as I slid down a very small slope to get a better shot. It was tricky getting back up without falling and smashing my $4000 camera and lens combo to bits on the ice.  I suppose that’s the kind of risk we photographers take in order to “get the shot.” Some would call that stupid… What can I say?

Holiday Baking on Christmas Eve, Rosie Warner Photography in Trenton & Highland Illinois

Merry Christmas! I know I missed a few days on my Image of the Day goal, but we had really fun company !

This Christmas, Jason and I decided to stay home. I usually spend the holiday in Michigan with my family. I’ll miss sledding, watching movies, and my nephew dressed up as Mario… yes, Mario from Super Mario Brothers :) To make it all the worse, Jason isn’t feeling well today. So… I decided to bake his favorite cookies while he napped. Don’t worry, I’ll include the recipe!

For those of you interested in the picture, it was shot with a 70mm lens at 2.8f, 50 shutter speed, 100 ISO on my dining room table, backlit by the window you see. No reflectors, just a simple shot. I normally like to use my Alien Bees with a softbox. However, I thought I’d keep this one simple, and I think I actually like how the window light lit it better. I’m sure this could easily be mimicked by placing and alien bee or lumedyne with a Soft Box right where you see the window and you’d get almost the same result. The walls in the dining room probably also acted like a giant reflector as they are a very light yellow color. So, to mimic with flash, you may need some white reflectors (eg. card stock ) In any case, I’d like to say, Yum!

HDR Image Review, Rosie Warner Photography in Highland and Trenton Illinois!

This is officially my first post since moving to the state of Illinois! So far we love it! Neighbors are great, city is great… taxes are high, but other than that… We especially love Lebanon Illinois. Whenever we can make it down there we make sure to stop at Dr. Jazz for Ice Cream and Fezzywigs for some tea.

Anyway, I was just trying out Nik Software’s new HDR Efex program. I have tried several others with only mediocre results. This, I loved! The results were amazing and the program was extremely easy to use. The interface was very similar to Lightroom with convenient presets on the left and manual adjustments on the right. Here’s the image. I took a total of five exposures to compile this image (a full stop difference between all–two over, two under) if anyone is interested in the details.

The car belongs to my fiance, Jason Mayne. It is a 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder. It’s normally kept in the garage, but it enjoyed its “Grand Day Out!” It’s lovingly referred to as “pretty car.”

I think I’ll be asking Santa for this program for Christmas :)

Port Oneida Fair: Rosie Warner

While up in Michigan, my family spent the day up North at the Port Oneida Fair. It’s a celebration of rural culture and arts, or so the add says. The event is held every year in August and consists of a variety of activities from farm to farm, some of which you’ll see here in the photos. It was quite a day. Jason enjoyed the history lessons, especially the WWII stuff!

These were also taken with my canon 30D and an 18-55mm lens.

                    ~Here’s a few interesting photos~

~While we were up there, we also went to Pyramid Point and Sleeping Bear Dunes. The view was amazing.~

Editorial Assignment #5 -Food- Rosie Warner

Here are some brownies I made at home! I used an Alien Bee light, with an umbrella attachment. I tried using a reflector, but decided that I liked the heavier contrast. I also ate a few too many of them…

Editorial #4- Health and Fitness Assignment- Rosie Warner

Kelly, at Tony’s Fitness Center, was kind enough to help me with this assignment. I used an alien bee flash and I took a Lumedyne flash with me for some outside shots. For post processing, I took out the yellow from the ambient light in the room and tweeked the saturation levels, all in Lightroom. Here’s some of what I shot.

This is a fast and easy way to make a quick video put to music. This is the first time I’ve used it, and am impressed. It’s extremely user friendly. Take a look…

In class shoot (editorial)- Rosie Warner

Here are a few examples of what we do in the editorial class with Jerry Schmidt… This day we used a reflector and subtractive lighting, and some north window light…

In Class Shoot (7/22/08) Food – Rosie Warner

For these shots we had a food stylist come in and set up some dishes for the class. We did some quick high key with 3 Alien Bee lights, a reflector, and a white backdrop. It was a fun shoot and it made everyone quite hungry. In the end, we ate our props…

Editorial #3 -The Beauty of Powell Gardens- Rosie Warner

Powell Gardens is a beautiful place to photograph. Our editorial class decided to take a little field trip there this past Thursday. It was a long day, but well worth it. I now have a plethora of beautiful flower pictures to hang around the house…

If you’ve never been to Powell Gardens and you are in the Kansas City area, make the trip out there. It’s a beautiful park, especially when you have a camera!
