We were so cold and stuck at home last week. It seems to ice more than snow here in southern Illinois. Jason didn’t go to work for three days because of the ice on the roads, leaving us stuck inside, unable to go anywhere.
The break from life was nice. We finally slowed down, got cozy, and relaxed on the couch. Surprisingly, we found little time to work on any of our ongoing projects, like the upstairs studio or the trim work throughout the house, or the closet doors, or general de-cluttering…
We did make it out for a short walk to the mailbox, treacherous as it was. I brought my camera out to record our venture. On the way back from the mailbox, I snapped a few quick photos of Jason’s frozen two and a half ton army truck. It looked quite ominous with its frozen chains and head lights staring at us.
Of course, I made Jason scuttle across the ice to pose in front of it. Amazingly, neither one of us fell. Though, I came close as I slid down a very small slope to get a better shot. It was tricky getting back up without falling and smashing my $4000 camera and lens combo to bits on the ice. I suppose that’s the kind of risk we photographers take in order to “get the shot.” Some would call that stupid… What can I say?

This is officially my first post since moving to the state of Illinois! So far we love it! Neighbors are great, city is great… taxes are high, but other than that… We especially love Lebanon Illinois. Whenever we can make it down there we make sure to stop at Dr. Jazz for Ice Cream and Fezzywigs for some tea.
Anyway, I was just trying out Nik Software’s new HDR Efex program. I have tried several others with only mediocre results. This, I loved! The results were amazing and the program was extremely easy to use. The interface was very similar to Lightroom with convenient presets on the left and manual adjustments on the right. Here’s the image. I took a total of five exposures to compile this image (a full stop difference between all–two over, two under) if anyone is interested in the details.

While up in Michigan, my family spent the day up North at the Port Oneida Fair. It’s a celebration of rural culture and arts, or so the add says. The event is held every year in August and consists of a variety of activities from farm to farm, some of which you’ll see here in the photos. It was quite a day. Jason enjoyed the history lessons, especially the WWII stuff!
These were also taken with my canon 30D and an 18-55mm lens.

~Here’s a few interesting photos~
~While we were up there, we also went to Pyramid Point and Sleeping Bear Dunes. The view was amazing.~

Here are some brownies I made at home! I used an Alien Bee light, with an umbrella attachment. I tried using a reflector, but decided that I liked the heavier contrast. I also ate a few too many of them…

Kelly, at Tony’s Fitness Center, was kind enough to help me with this assignment. I used an alien bee flash and I took a Lumedyne flash with me for some outside shots. For post processing, I took out the yellow from the ambient light in the room and tweeked the saturation levels, all in Lightroom. Here’s some of what I shot.

For these shots we had a food stylist come in and set up some dishes for the class. We did some quick high key with 3 Alien Bee lights, a reflector, and a white backdrop. It was a fun shoot and it made everyone quite hungry. In the end, we ate our props…
