Highland IL Baseball ~Rosie Warner Photography~

Let’s just say, I’m a little crazy when it comes to photography.

The night before the big trip to Disney World with my brother and
his family and my sister and her family, I had the opportunity to shoot some
awesome baseball portraits. So, even though I had to drive four hours that
evening to get to Warrensburg Missouri to catch a six o’clock flight from
Kansas City, I said, “of course I can do it!”

We got done shooting at 8pm, I had everything uploaded to
the computer and was ready to drive by 9pm. Got to Warrensburg at 1:30 am, left
Warrensburg at 4am to catch our 6am flight… I was exhausted by that evening!

Now, I wouldn’t normally fly out of Kansas City, or go on a
Disney Vacation with my brother’s family. The situation was that my brother had
planned a big family vacation for this summer and, being military, a week after
everything was booked he got deployment orders. Everything being
non-refundable, they asked me to go in his place and help out his wife with the
two and four year old girls! So I took his flight with his family out of Kansas
City! The funny thing of it is, he still wound up being able to go and was able
to meet us at Disney World. Turns out that the break between pre-deployment
training and the actual deployment fell right on the days he had planned his
family vacation… It just figures, doesn’t it? In any case, they got some great
vacation photography out of it, which is to come later…

For now, Baseball!

What’s Fuzzy and Cute? ~Kittens by Rosie Warner Photography~

Rosie Warner Photography has been busy… with kittens!!

Our mama kitty recently had a litter of five kittens. If you’re a cat lover like me, I’m sure you can imagine how hard it would be to watch four little kittens that you’ve played with and taken care of for the past six weeks go home in someone else’s arms. Though, it wasn’t watching them go that broke my heart; it was watching our beloved “mama kitty” cry and search for her babies when they were suddenly nowhere to be found.

I have to admit, to my embarrassment, that when Mama came back from playing in the field to find her babies gone and started a moo like cry as she searched for them in the garage, under the vehicles and all around the yard, I couldn’t help but cry. She was such a good mother to all her babies. It must be hard for puppy and kitten breeders to watch litter after litter leave the nest, along with the sad mama left behind.

Nevertheless! It is so nice to know that we gave them to people who will obviously love them and take good care of them! It was so nice to see how happy the kittens made everyone who came to get them and to see how each kitten’s personality complimented different people. I guess what they say must be true; animals do have a way of choosing their owners!

We decided to keep the smallest of the litter. At the time, he seemed to be the most laid back but, now I’m not so sure. He’s such a little stinker. I couldn’t help but laugh as he chased after Mama, leapt into the air and tried to take a bite at her ear. In retaliation, she put him in a headlock and gave him a bath.

Of Course… since I am a photographer, I couldn’t help but want pictures of them all before they left for their new homes!

This was Butterscotch! She looks like a mini version of her mama.

We called her White Kitty… yes, not very creative 🙂

Little Gracy was the friskiest kitten! She went to a home with a puppy!!! Hope she can hold her own 🙂

Mother Daughter Duo!

I’ve had a little too much coffee today. I’ve spend the entire morning trying to get caught up on tasks that have been lingering in the back of my mind for months! This, along with all the new items on the checklist, has me feeling overwhelmed. At least I received a short break from the major landscaping we’ve been trying to get done due to the unexpected snowfall. I would prefer watching my photovision videos, but alas, I am editing and working…

In any case, I finally edited some portraits of a dear friend of mine and her daughter. Yes, these are from their visit last fall! Oh, how time flies. These were just pictures taken on the fly, while we were out gallivanting around the quaint little town of Lebanon, which was right up our alley, with antique shops, Dr. Jazz’s Soda Fountain ice cream shop, and Fezzywigs wine and tea shop! We spent all day bumming around…

Since I had no flash with me, I used subtractive lighting. This means, I found an overhang that effectively put these two in shadow. Since it doesn’t block light from the sides (just blocks the light from overhead, which would otherwise cause dark shadowing under the eyes – racoon eyes!-) the open sides of the overhang acts like a giant softbox…

Quick Definition:

When working in “neutral” shade (no direction) or overcast using subractive lighting will usually produce better results than attempting to use a reflector as the key light.

With subtractive lighting, one can simply look for an overhang if you are in town, the edge of a tree lining that would effectively block overhead light, or a black fabric panel to block (thus reducing shadowing under the eyes). The idea is to block the light from overhead, thus creating a single light source from the side of the subject. Also, by blocking the directionless soft light from one side you create directionality from the other. The light stays soft and wrap-around on the other “key” light side.

It’s important to practice, even if you don’t typically shoot this way, in case of flash failure… you don’t want to caught without a backup plan when with a client.

Now for the pictures!

BACK AND LOVIN’ IT!

I’ve been away for a while it seems! Well, I’m back and feeling totally refreshed! My fiancé and I made it home last week, after three weeks in Biloxi, Mississippi. We had a great time, enjoying the Mardi Gras season and seeing old friends 🙂

Of course I scheduled a shoot for two days after we got home! Though we were tired, the day was perfect. It started out sunny and beautiful. Luckily, the clouds and freezing weather came just as we were at our last location. Brrrr…. Joel and Angie put on their game faces and braved the cold for us! Thanks for a great time!

Dr. Jazz’s Soda Fountain, in Lebanon, Illinois, was perfect!

Freezing in Trenton, Illinois ~ Rosie Warner Photography

We were so cold and stuck at home last week. It seems to ice more than snow here in southern Illinois. Jason didn’t go to work for three days because of the ice on the roads, leaving us stuck inside, unable to go anywhere.

The break from life was nice. We finally slowed down, got cozy, and relaxed on the couch. Surprisingly, we found little time to work on any of our ongoing projects, like the upstairs studio or the trim work throughout the house, or the closet doors, or general de-cluttering…

We did make it out for a short walk to the mailbox, treacherous as it was. I brought my camera out to record our venture. On the way back from the mailbox, I snapped a few quick photos of Jason’s frozen two and a half ton army truck. It looked quite ominous with its frozen chains and head lights staring at us.

Of course, I made Jason scuttle across the ice to pose in front of it. Amazingly, neither one of us fell. Though, I came close as I slid down a very small slope to get a better shot. It was tricky getting back up without falling and smashing my $4000 camera and lens combo to bits on the ice.  I suppose that’s the kind of risk we photographers take in order to “get the shot.” Some would call that stupid… What can I say?

Allison & Jerry–#6 Couples — Rosie Warner

This was a crazy shoot. The pocket wizards were not working properly, we didn’t have much time before dark, and I was covered in poison ivy… All in all, I guess you could say it went pretty good. Thanks to Allison and Jerry for helping me out with this! I really appreciate it!

#5: On-Location Shoot — Rosie Warner

For Kim, we spent two hours running around downtown, Pertle Spring, and around UCM’s campus with the Lumedyne. I prefer the Lumedyne for ease of use for inexperiencedassistants, aka. Jason. Thanks Jason! I found a cute little yellow couch that looked very ethereal next to the pond at Pertle. The wind was a bit of a hazard causing Jason to have a few issues with the lumedyne with soft-box attachment, but it make the images very moody, blowing Kim’s hair all over the place. Here’s what we got~ Rosie

#1: Gridspot Assignment- Rosie Warner

This was a shoot done with one main light fixed with a honeycomb grid. A fill light and backlights were also used. Courtney was gracious enough to help me out with this assignment. We had a great time, and I think we got some good shots! Hope you like! … and thanks Courtney!

Port Oneida Fair: Rosie Warner

While up in Michigan, my family spent the day up North at the Port Oneida Fair. It’s a celebration of rural culture and arts, or so the add says. The event is held every year in August and consists of a variety of activities from farm to farm, some of which you’ll see here in the photos. It was quite a day. Jason enjoyed the history lessons, especially the WWII stuff!

These were also taken with my canon 30D and an 18-55mm lens.

                    ~Here’s a few interesting photos~

~While we were up there, we also went to Pyramid Point and Sleeping Bear Dunes. The view was amazing.~
